A 19-year-old girl was today stabbed three times by a man with psychiatric problems who told police voices told him to make a ‘sacrifice’ for Ramadan.
It is understood the man, 32, stabbed the girl twice in the wrist and once in the abdomen at 4pm in Rennes, western France.
According to local media he attacked her while she was waiting for a bus outside the city’s Lycee Chateaubriand, where she is said to be a first-year preparatory student.
The man, who said he was being treated for schizophrenia, told officers he was a Muslim before handing over the knife.
The attack comes a day after a jihadist killed a French police couple in a small town near Paris, in a stabbing inspired by the Islamic State group.
A witness claimed the knifeman was overpowered by bystanders, according to Rennes magazine Le Mensuel.
He was immediately assessed by a doctor and sent to a psychiatric hospital.
He told investigators he was being treated for schizophrenia and was supposed to receive an injection on the day of the attack.
The girl was said to be standing at the bus stop on Rue Mirabeau when she was attacked, Le Dauphine reported. The teenager’s wounds are said to be not life-threatening.
‘Voices told him that he had to make a sacrifice on the occasion of Ramadan,’ prosecutor Nicolas Jacquet told AFP. Ramadan is the holy Muslim fasting month that began on June 6.
Mr Jawuet added that the man had been in and out of psychiatric wards several times.
An investigation has been opened into attempted murder.
