Yazidi ISIS sex slaves killed themselves to escape rape and torture

Dozens of ISIS sex slaves have killed themselves to escape rape and torture, reveals ‘smuggler’ who’s devoted her life to rescuing girls ‘sold like animals’

Dozens of Yazidi girls have been driven to suicide by the ISIS fighters who abused them, the people risking their own lives to rescue them have revealed.

MailOnline spoke to Ameena Saeed Hasan, a Yazidi mother-of-one who runs a ‘smuggling operation’ to rescue ISIS’s sex slaves out of her apartment, and businessman Abu Shujaa who has been nicknamed the ‘father of courage’ for helping nearly 400 people escape.

They claim the girls who fail to escape are killing themselves so they do not have to endure a single more day of rape, torture and beatings at the hands of their captors.

‘Many girls lose hope when they are with ISIS and choose suicide if they cannot find a way back,’ Ameena Saeed Hasan, a former Iraqi lawmaker, told MailOnline.

Local legend: Nicknamed the 'father of courage', Abu Shujaa has risked his life to rescue nearly 400 Yazidis (pictured) from ISIS

Connected: Shujaa claims to have a vast 'underground network' of helpers who help him get captured Yazidi girls to safety

Ameena, 36, and her husband Khaleel have helped hundreds of girls escape but they are not always successful.

‘We have lost contact with many girls, and I am sure they have killed themselves,’ Ameena told MailOnline.

‘I have some pictures of the girls who have committed suicide,’ she said, although she refuses to share the pictures of the dead girls with anyone.

More than 500 Yazidi women and young girls were abducted by ISIS fighters when they stormed the Sinjar region last August and slaughtered more than 5,000 of their men.

Those who were lucky enough to escape have told of the cold-blooded cruelty they faced at the hands of ISIS, who parcel them out to fighters and local leaders as gifts. The girls who contact Ameena for help are no different.

‘Ten days ago we helped one girl escape with her children,’ Ameena said, pausing to steady her emotions, ‘But the ISIS fighter who abused her also killed her daughter.

‘Her daughter was only one year and five-months-old and he killed her right in front of her eyes.’

‘Many of the girls become pregnant but when they come back, they have an abortion. They don’t want the baby. They say their father is one of ‘fire’, he is a man of ISIS.’

From her apartment in Dohuk, northern Iraq, where they raise their six-year-old daughter, Ameena and her husband organise daring missions to free Yazidi slaves from ISIS’s clutches.

Trapped girls ring Ameena to tell them where they are. She then forwards their number to one of her several ‘smugglers’ who arrange to meet them close to where they are being held and then help them get away.

The price can vary, but it generally costs between £1,300 and £3,200 to free a girl from her ISIS captor, Ameena told MailOnline.

She added: ‘Most of the smugglers are Arabs. They are not Daesh [ISIS] but they live in the area controlled by Daesh. They don’t buy the girls, but they steal them.’

Bittersweet: Ameena (pictured), 36, and her husband Khaleel have helped hundreds of girls escape but they believe the ones who they lose contact with have killed themselves

Persecuted: More than 500 Yazidi women and young girls (pictured in August last year) were abducted by ISIS fighters when they stormed the Sinjar region last August

‘I will never deal with Daesh directly,’ she added, anger resonating from her voice.

Constantly dealing with these abusive cases takes a heavy emotional toll on Ameena, but she refuses to give up.

She said: ‘Everyday I receive calls saying: ‘Please save me. When will you save me?’ At first we were just a small group of volunteers and we just collected the names of those who were kidnapped.

‘But now we have the Office of Yazidi affairs in Dohuk funded by the Barzani government [Masoud Barzani is President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region].’

The problems do not cease with their release as many Yazidis have nowhere to live, something Ameena, whose work has been recognised with an award from the US State Department, blames on inaction from the West and Iraqi government.

Why after one year do we have girls everyday being raped and killing themselves? Why are our girls sold in the market like animals

She said: ‘The last case my husband helped a family to escape but when they came back, they had no house and the government doesn’t make it easy to issue new documentation to leave the country.

‘Why after one year do we have girls everyday being raped and killing themselves? Why are our girls sold in the market like animals?

‘The international community must help us. Maybe if they don’t help us, we will be finished in ten years.’

The families of missing girls reach out to Ameena, because she is herself a Yazidi woman from Sinjar and knows ‘many people who were kidnapped’, including her relatives and neighbours. Most of the people she has managed to save were held around Mosul and Tal-afar,  both in Iraq.

‘We help the girls in Iraq, but the border is very difficult. We have to call the leader of the Peshmerga [Kurdish forces in Iraq] to open the border, but sometimes they think they are Daesh [ISIS].’

‘I have contacted girls in Syria but unfortunately, I have not been able to help any of them escape.’

The Yazidis trapped in Syria also turn to a local legend named Abu Shujaa, who has established an ‘underground network’ of helpers throughout the war-torn country.

Hero: Abu Shujaa (pictured with some of the Yazidi children he has rescued) claims to have rescued 380 people from ISIS

Personal risk: Unlike Ameena, who facilitates the rescues through her network of 'smugglers', Shujaa (pictured) conducts many of the rescues himself

Collateral damage: Shujaa (pictured), a father-of-12, told MailOnline how he has lost 12 members of his smuggling team to ISIS, although one of them was by 'accident' when he was hit in a drone strike

Speaking from his living room, which is just minutes away from Amena’s flat, he explained how he and his ‘team’ personally collect the prisoners trapped behind ISIS lines.

He said: ‘I don’t pay any smuggler, only the transport. My group steals them and we smuggle them to the border.’

Nicknamed the ‘father of courage’, Shujaa, 40, has become famous for helping to save, as he claims, more than 380 Yazidis and also for his ‘cat and mouse’ exploits against ISIS.

Most of the people he saves are from Raqqa, ISIS’s de-facto capital in Syria, and other land controlled by the terror group in the country.

He is purposely vague about what he did prior this life-threatening endeavor, but open about the strategy he uses to fool ISIS.

He said: ‘I have over a hundred people working for me in Raqqa and Syria. Every time I free a girl, I get more information.’

‘Five times they [ISIS] have trapped our group and I have lost 12 members. One was by accident, he got hit by a US drone. The rest were killed by Daesh.

‘I am sure they [ISIS] will try again, but I will not stop until all Yazidis are free. They may trap some of my group but my group gets bigger. When one Yazidi escapes, they give me information and more contacts.’

‘In September, I saved seven girls from the house of one Australian-Lebanese ISIS fighter, that was the first time. I brought them to Turkey and then to Iraq.

‘Recently I saved two girls from a house of a Saudi. I know a lot of British have joined Daesh. The kidnapped Yazidis tell me there are British people abusing the Yazidis.’

He laughed when asked if he gets any support. ‘Government help?’ he joked, ‘I get very little and if this money was under my control, I would free most of these Yazidi women.’

Hazardous work: Most of the people Shujaa (pictured) saves are from Raqqa, ISIS's de-facto capital in Syria, and other land controlled by the terror group in the country

The interview was regularly interrupted by Shujaa’s ringing phone. He apologised after finishing his third call with a contact in ISIS territory, adding: ‘But, today or tomorrow, I have to go to Syria, and bring a woman and three kids, if I can.’

He leaned forward and smilingly said: ‘You see in ISIS’s mind, those who try to help the kidnapped -they believe they are deserving of death.’

Shujaa, a father-of-12, has been rescuing Yazidis ever since ISIS attacked Sinjar in August last year.

Shujaa said: ‘My family are of course worried about me, but it is my decision and they support me.

The attack fundamentally changed both Amena and Abu Shujaa’s life and gave them a new purpose – the preservation of innocent life.

Ameena said: ‘I am a former parliamentarian, and I have contacts in the government [and] I will do whatever I can to help.’

So will Shujaa, who told MailOnline: ‘I traded between Turkey and Syria before and I know many of these people who help me from by business relationships.

‘You know, maybe we choose this life. But I will not stop now until everybody has been saved from Daesh.’

  1. Poor Yazidi souls. G-d bless you, all. In death you have all found G-d’s peace. Being a sex slave for satan’s army (muzzies) is a hell worse than death.
